THE NEW YORK MARATHON IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS EVENTS WITH OVER 50,000 PEOPLE RUNNING IN EARLY NOVEMBER EVERY YEAR.
NEW YORK MARATHON - Novemeber 4th 2018
The New York Marathon is a very special event for Achilles International. This is where Achilles founder, Dick Traum, an above the knee amputee, became the first amputee to complete the race - way back in 1976. It was this experience that drove him to create the Achilles Track Club, now called Achilles International.
In 1985 Brian Froggatt, also an above knee amputee, from Dargaville became the first athlete with a disability to travel from New Zealand to run the New York Marathon with Achilles Track Club.
A few years later, in 1993, John Riley became our second above knee amputee to complete the New York Marathon along with his coach Peter Loft, both from Whangarei. When they returned from New York, John and Peter - along with Craig Jessop and Myles Flynn, and supported by Gina Flynn and Yvonne Loft - set up the Achilles Track Club New Zealand, based in Auckland.
Since then the New York Marathon has become an annual pilgrimage for Achilles NZ, having never missed a year and returning again in 2017 for the 24th time - with a group of very excited athletes and a crew of guides and supporters.
